Welcome to today's Britain. As reported in msn today, to whom i will give credit where its due, we are a top heavy nation, with the number of people above 77 greater than those under 16, full of crime, smokers, singletons and obesity. Reading the fact that 82% of people prefer to spend their spare time watching television is enough to make me despair.
Let me clarify something before i start to sound hypocritical.
I do spend a lot of time on my computer. I am what may be called 'a facebook whore', owing to the fact i regularly post photos, check it a few times a day, and yes, write on the infamous fagbook 'walls'. I can just hear you groaning a geekish cry of despair. Facebook is the epitome of 'mainstream' internet, and i hate it as much as i love it. But back to the point.
I honestly believe that the internet is greatly superior to television. I mean, i sit on here and i write articles about current affairs, i read the news, i read about technology, i faff about on wikipedia, and i generally exercise my brain and educate myself. But as well as the internet, guess what? I READ. I GO OUT. I CONVERSE with real human beings. And to be honest, given the choice, there is nothing i would rather do than be sociable. I cannot think of anything worse than spending my spare time watching tv. It upsets me that the nation is WASTING so much intelligence, so much brain activity that could be spent doing something, anything, else. More people answered 'watching tv' than 'spending time with my friends and family'.
I don't own a tv. Don't get me wrong, i'm not one of those 'new age' kids who eats lentils and wears tie dye and plays with wooden toys, but at uni, i don't have one. At home, we have one. In the living room. And i watch it with my family. And we make comments on it. If there's something i really want to watch, like 'Skins' for example (you haven't seen it? you really should, its marvellous), then i use 4OD. And i watch it. For an hour a week. I don't use it for company, but as part of a social situation. I watch it in bed, with said boyfriend, and we argue about Jeremy Kyle and Loose Women in the mornings. And i love it, because i'm spending time with him. Aside from that? Its all about the net.
I think we should have some sort of internet promotion scheme..providing people know what they're getting into. This morning, my mum asks me for some help because she thinks she has a virus. Apparently when looking for some flight times for my sister, a porn site popped up. My mum, well, hit the roof. "Real porn, this was horrific, if your sister had seen it!". Imagining the worst, i explain to her about tracking cookies, and how when she went back to show my dad, it offered her a download that could remove the content from her computer, which probably was the virus.
"It was, buzzy, you know, women with their legs open...you could see everything, this wasn't fake!". I had no idea people could be so naiive. The amount of times i get child porn, even, appear in a pop up is unbelievable.he internet certainly educates you and robs you of naiivity, but is also crammed full of information and advice. Perhaps if we educated people about the internet, they would learn something, be motivated to get off their fat arses and DO something OTHER than television!
But that would leave no room fot the minority, would it? I'm not sure if i want to convert the masses, or stay part of an elite group that has wandered away from the mainstream. Now thats another debate for another day.
