I am not one bit a supporter of the church but this article is crap.
Well... I really don't know where to begin I really don't. And considering the crucifixion I got for neanderthals... 1) Passover is a celebratory feast to celebrate the ending of a fast. The lamb is killed to eat at the feast, and is not claimed to be sacrificed, it is killed to comemorate the fact that this allegedly happened to save the Hebrews from the final plague in Egypt. 2) The Bible states that it happened at the passover, not near the time of. Jesus was a Jew, and so celebrated the Passover by breaking bread, as all Jews at the time would have 3) The Christian bible has references as early as the third century. 4) His name would have been pronounced "Yeshua". It is in Hebrew not Arabic. 5) There isn't any record of the Crucifixion in Roman Records because the Romans didn't use crucifixion until 337 AD. AFTER Christianity had become their main religion. 6) Apart from 5, he was Crucified by the Jews, or so the bible states, since it was instated by Herod, a JEWISH king. There are a number of highly questionable sources which suggest the questioning of a Joshua, but meh. 7) the Four gospels are known to be written before the letters of Paul, which have been historically dated to the 1st Century AD. Not the 14th Century. Seriously, dude, if I were going to go and criticize this subject, I would A) Learn my lesson from the other evening and get my facts straight first B) go for the bit where the Roman Catholics compete with Pagan holidays for a few centuried before making easter mobile, and say the Easter comes from the name Oester for a Pagan god of fertility. Incidentally, the Germanic word for Austria, Oesterreich, means fertile empire.
AND in addition, every major world religion, even buddhism, accepts the existence of the Christ in some form. Funny that for a man who has no existence, that the other faiths aren't desperately decrying it?
most is minor details.
the main point i was making was that, outside of the bible, there is no official documentation of him being crucified, which for apparently such a major figure (assuming he was who he was claimed to be) is incredibly surprising. if we claim that all religion is bullshit - which it is imo - then saying that just because other religions recognise him, would be like saying that Star Wars was actually real, as Jay and Silent Bob talk about it in Clerks. and the sacrificial lamb, is actually done every year at passover as a scapegoat to "clean their sins". look it up, seriously.
I did look it up. Furthermore I confirmed with Dad who is the son of a Jew.
And as I said, no documentation was kept of him being Crucified because the Jews didn't keep that kind of documentation as a rule (we don't have any reliable documentation of the crucifixions of the period for anybody). Furthermore, by those who crucified him, as it states in the bible, he wasn't regarded as the Christ, and so they wouldn't have considered him important enough to document his death. He was a political figurehead if he did exist, and you can remember the big hush up about Saddam's death (though I wish I had a better modern day example). Those who did document the death would have told it aurally as stories. Such as the Gospels. Furthermore, speaking of the bible as a single volume is somewhat erroneous in itself. There are many books in the bible, and as they were found separately, in a historical context, should (and are by historians) treated as corrobarative sources. Most modern historians accept the existence of a Jesus or Joshua who was killed for treason charges. The real debate, from my perspective, is whether or not he was the son of God. And while they may be minor trivialities, most of them are a question of respect. If you are going to pose a question or make a statement against something, you should at least treat it with enough credit that you might be wrong. Otherwise you simply wind up as narrow minded and unaccepting as those who promote the idea you are pushing against.
Agreed your article is both narrow minded and insulting, I am not a strong christian but every bit of evidence there would be sound in this day and age's practices however 2000 years ago im sure there wasnt a solid system for recording every thing that happened. At the end of the day whether you think religion is rubbish or not you should have the maturity to accept that your opinion is just as valid as the next persons and these sorts of outburst cause offence, yes we have freedom of speech but we also have sensitivity to other peoples beliefs
The GodFather
Just what is your secret scuzz? Any number of things I've said on this site could be taken as both insulting and narrow minded about christianity but I never get this much response to any of those posts.
Besides, easter (like all major holidays now) is mostly kept alive by advertisement and selective selling of chocolate eggs. Without major business investment who really thinks that any holiday traditions would survive? (with the exception of april fools day since as far as I can tell nothing special is sold on the first of april) This godfather appears to have a valid point though. We do indeed have freedom of speech, this means that all of us are completly free to soak other peoples beliefs in urine and vomit, such as when I violently laugh at godfather for expecting anyone on this site (with perhaps a few exceptions) to show any semblance of maturity. Yes you silly twit, scuzz's little rant probably was ridiculously ill-informed but how the hell do you dare tell anyone that we should be sensitive to other peoples beliefs when I know for a fact that if you give me a few minutes in london I can find someone who will shout loudly from the rooftops daily that my soul is in danger if I don't waste both time and money on outdated rituals fueled by magic mushroom induced seizures. Ok, that was perhaps overly mean and I may consider apologising at a later date. I follow all holidays that benefit me in some way, this is very selfish but it is also very human. How the hell anyone can bear the thought of some ultra-being holding sway over our lives I do not know. And yes anyone who reads my entries I am a hypocrite and damn proud of it.
i must admit, i am loving the how calling of narrow mindedness.
you guys really need to either read the about page (link up to your left) and/or read more of the articles. taking anything written here (especially articles with no documented sources) as 100% serious, just shows how easy it is to push your buttons.
I could swear you just added that in while I wasn't looking.
You know full well it's remarkably easy to push my buttons. It's half the reason you invited me to add at this site |
