I have been reading a book recently. It's a good book, well worth a read, and it's called "The English" and it is written by Jeremy Paxman.
Now when he is busy being aloof and pretentious, I have no time, possibly less, for Paxman and his bad manners when interviewing slimy fatcat politicians. They may be evil, but even in WWII we would give captured Nazi pilots a fag and a cuppa.
However, this book has touched a nerve with me. Largely because more and more, it seems, we are losing the National identity which we are so proud of not having. But this is the paradoxical problem. We aren't even sure what it is we are losing, since we (being English) are so very good at understatement.
A brief note of clarification should be sounded, as to the difference between English, and British. Britain encompasses that which includes Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, as well as England. This is the result of numerous attempts of English governments to subjugate these nations and make them England. To their credit they have resisted magnificently.
And this brings me nicely to my first point. This point is English government. While I do not, as you may have gathered, have any objection to Scotland and Wales having their own legislature, I heartily object to them eating from both pudding bowls. That is to say, having power in Westminster when Westminster has now next to no power in each of these countries. Either Govern yourself, or sod off (to be blunt). And take Gordon Brown with you.
However, this is not only a problem of in-situ identity crisis brought about under the banner of racial tolerance, but is also an issue that rains in from Brussels. Those people who ruin (sorry, typo there, I meant run, of course I did) our country at some point in their infinite forsight and wisdom signed us into the EU. A deal which has gotten progressively more sour by the minute. Apart from anything else national sovereignties HAVE been handed over, and furthermore national monies with it.
These things have a couple of underlying themes. Money and Power. Those who are in them tend to want to stay that way, and the best way of maintaining the UK in a position of money and power was to sell the English soul to do it. The fact is, we would probably still all live quite comfortably without, and in fact it may be even the case that we would live MORE comfortably. The logic here being that, a) we would be less desireable as an immigration destination if we had less apparent money flashing around and b) Our in situ- population would not have balooned as it apparently has done (owing to the natural resource body clocks which tend to govern such events.
Now the observent, quick minded, and critical among you (not to mention you cynics out there) will have just thought "how have we sould the English soul?" The rest of you can skip this paragraph. The reason we have sold the English soul in these actions is that we have done something, in a National action, which is actually about as un-English as it comes. We fought on in a daft fashion against what still is our inevitable fall from power. And we have been doing this since the fall of the British Empire. The fact is, that if we had been being collectively English (rather than American- influenced muscle flexing politicians) then we would have done the English thing, as we did at Dunkirk, and withdrawn quietly and made our plans to come back later. We would have then told everyone what a strategic victory it was. Which it would have been.
Now that those less quick witted people have rejoined, I can address the other point I made about being a target for immigrants. Now before anyone says anything about "but we are a nation of immigrants", "you're a racist nazi-esque pig", "people need a safe place to go from their own countries" and "you're grandad was an immigrant", I am going to address those 4 points before you get there. Because thats how English literature tends to be written. (Just check out the other people's posts, and these people are SO English its unbelievable. Even Scuzz, and he's Scottish!)
- We are indeed a nation formed of immigrants. But never before in any historical period have we had entire districts in our cities which speak solely in foreign languages. Furthermore, never in our history have such noisy minorities campaigned to have their own laws instated in place of those that already exist, or alongside them. Even William the Conquerer pretty much arrived and decreed that it was business as usual, just the management changed.
- I hate racism. I hate it with a passion. My grandfather was a Jew, and my entire family history has been all but obliviated by the mechanic of a megalomaniac madman. The fact is, that under our own statutes and laws, we should not be accepting any Asylum seekers. Why? because there are no nations currently adjacent to us which are persecuting any given group of people. These "asylum seekers" should be seeking asylum in the nearest country to their own which will offer them safe refuge. Notably, this isn't here. I have accidentally covered two points there, oh well.
- Yes, my grandfather was a Jew, exported from Czechoslovakia just before WWII, and for that matter, his wife (my grandmother) is descended from the French, and then on my other side we have Welsh relatives when you take three generations back. However these people are all English, because English is a quality not a nationality or race.
My grandfather came here, learned English because, in his words "its proper to" and when he got the chance, went to Africa to show the Nazis exactly what he thought about their gas chambers.
My grandmother who married him when he came back to the UK is actually raised a cockney. You don't get more traditionally English than that!
My granmother on the other side of the family sings in a church choir at 80 years old, and does so in perfect english tones withou a hint of a welsh accent, and her husband two was one of the "Brave happy few" to volunteer for WWII.
So where does that leave me? I was raised in a C of E related School in the countryside with birds singing and watching the concords fly overhead, went on to a Comprehensive School that was built in the sixties, and still came out the other end a gentleman as the Scouts made me. I'm as English as they come.
So what needs to be done to make England English once more?
- Red tape needs to be cut. We are a country of commonsense, if you're going to be stupid, you get hurt/die etc. Enough said.
- English Politicians need to grow a backbone and develop some common sense. They need to be able to say "it would actually be nicer to slow our economy slightly" and to tell America and Europe, politely but firmly, exactly where to go. Possibly including a diagram for the American Leaders. Furthermore statistical analyses such as "people who go to uni earn more, therefore everyone needs to go to uni to get more money" needs to stop. This is where commonsense comes into it. Employers are looking for the best employees, and degrees are a way of destinguishing that. If EVERYONE has a degree, then effectively, no one has.
- Immigrants should be allowed in if they are going to make a positive contribution to society, those who are doing minimal jobs which are removing work oppertunities from the British born (in particular the non- qualified youth) are not going to help us.
- Those who are not content with the Laws here should be sent packing. It's English law, you don't like it, lump it. It ain't gonna be Shariah |(sp?)| any time soon.
